Lamb to the Slaughter-2019

After a long day at work, Mary Maloney pulled her car into the driveway and made her way inside of the house, minutes later another car pulled into the driveway it was Patrick Maloney (her husband). Mary went and got changed out of her work clothes and washed her face. She made her way into the living room and glanced over at her husband who was sat in his chair staring at the tv blankly. “Would you like me to bring you a drink while you watch tv?” she asked, “please” he replied without looking up from the tv.  She went and fetched a beer from the fridge and handed it to him, still without breaking his gaze he replied “thanks”.

Mary went about her business of bringing the washing in and getting her work clothes ready for the next morning.  As she passed her husband his gaze was still not broken with the tv. “Would you like something to eat before dinner” Mary called from the kitchen, “don’t worry darling I’ll make us something” he replied as he switched off the tv.

Minutes later he brought in a platter and placed it onto the coffee table. “Thank you,” said Mary, but Patrick didn’t reply. “How was work,” she asked as she reached for a cracker from the platter, “busy” he replied not making eye contact. “Anything interesting happen,” she asked trying to get the conversation going. “Nothing new,” he said as he stared out the window.

“Listen here Mary,” he said still not making eye contact, “there’s something I need to tell you, you may not like what I have to say but it needs to be said”.

He spoke to her for a few minutes, it didn’t take long, as each work rolled out of his mouth Mary’s face began to drop.

Once he finished, he said “just remember this is not your fault’. And with that being said he stood up and took the empty platter into the kitchen. Mary sat there a few moments not moving, her face was frozen unable to move. Then she heard her husband call out “would you like me to put dinner on”, Mary snapped out of her frozen state, maybe be she had heard wrong or maybe she was dreaming, she didn’t know so she went on with her evening acting as if everything was normal. “It’s fine dear, I’ll make us something you go and sit down”.

Mary sat in the kitchen and looked at her phone there was a text from her husband and it read- “I have booked us in for marriage counseling tomorrow at 10 am”.

She stared at her phone blankly then threw it across the counter in frustration. Maybe what her husband had told her was true, maybe it was over.
